Play Full Out
I am 25 years old by last September. I’d just gotten out of a business, I was at a crossroads, trying to figure out what was next in my life, what I really cared about, and what I dreamed of having, being, and doing. I did a lot of core value exercises and bounced to a clear understanding that my deepest core value is quality relationships.
Quality relationships are those we have with people who care, who lift and push us up, who help us take ourselves to the next level. Those people will hold us accountable, but will also lend a hand and be supportive when things get challenging. They’re the friends who won’t let us fail, who we can call day or night and be 100 percent vulnerable and honest with. We can say, “I’m scared. I’m not sure what I’m doing. I think I’m on the right track, but I second-guess myself all the time,” and they’ll actually listen.
I meet a lot of people. Not everyone is going to be my best friend or someone I want to build a quality relationship with. Finding quality relationships isn’t about going to a conference, getting 50 business cards, and following up with every single one of them. Sometimes we mesh with each other and find similar connections and shared experiences, and sometimes there isn’t a spark or connection. That’s okay. It’s okay not to be best friends with every single person we meet. The challenge and the key is finding a handful of quality relationships and having an attitude of “How can I help?” I support the people I chose to spend my time with. It works.
You only get one shot at this life and you only get today. Since you only have one shot, play full out.
By playing full out, by pushing and challenging myself, I’ve been able to stay true to the things I’m most interested in, like quality relationships. So if you want to go to that concert or that conference, if you want to go on that vacation or climb a mountain or volunteer at an orphanage, if you want to cook a dinner or take a class or follow some competition just … do it fully out.
